Fall is really here now
Homecoming has ushered in the colors and excitement of fall around here.
This morning, the signal that fall is really here finally arrived.
It's the way the band kids smell when they come in from practicing on the football field. All woods-y and smoke-y and crisp.
Deep Breath. Ahhhhhhh.

Fall Homecoming 2010
Last week we celebrated CCCHS Fall Homecoming 2010. This is a tradition remembered by many Tiger Alumni from the past. The bonfires, parades and the crowning of the Queen are things we nearly all have fond memories of.
Another memory any Tiger grad from the past 30 or so years will have in common is that of the CCCHS secretary Jane Sherbert. She has served as the eyes and ears of this building for longer than many of us have been alive. Jane is as much a part of the CCCHS experience as the classes, the lockers and the friends. Just ask anyone who ever tried to impersonate their mom on the phone. (Jane has the uncanny ability to detect when it is, in fact, YOU and not your mom calling in about that "dentist appointment")

Jane was the CCCHS Homecoming Queen in 1963. Last Friday night, in commemoration of the 48th anniversary of her own crowning, she joined the candidates on the field to crown the 2010 Homecoming Queen. She was escorted by Senior Chancelor Graham, Student Council Vice-President.
More photos from the week (all courtesy of our friend Phil Frigon) to come! We had a blast!

Caution! Wet floors

It started out innocently. Julia wanted to make a sign warning people about the dangers of slipping on a wet floor and falling.
It ended as a lesson in the definition of the word "phallic".
Yes, that is her name at the top. She is left handed and writes from right to left, with the letters inversed. If you hold it in a mirror it reads perfectly. Her dad and I have given up and decided that the Kindergarten teacher has her work cut out for her.

Mrs. Rieger gets T-U-F-F
I broke up a fight today.
Not an every day occurance at our school, but not totally uncommon either.
I was walking past a crowd of kids that are typically pretty loud and rowdy anyway. Suddenly, the noise and the scuffling escalated until two boys, both much larger than I am, were standing nose to nose with their hands around each others' throats. Of course, I HAD to jump in.
"Stop it!! Stop it right now!" I screamed, like a ninny. I stepped in between them and waved my arms wildly. "You two both cut it out!"
They broke apart when a third boy pushed one away from the other.
I told one of the kids to follow me into the back entrance of the office, while another teacher took the other kid in the front entrance. After the dust had settled and I had reported to the Principal what I had witnessed, I walked back to my classroom.
As the adrenaline began to wear off, I started to think about what had just happened. Maybe I had made an impression on them. In fact, I was pretty proud of myself. That fight could have gotten a lot uglier had I not flexed my experienced "teacher muscles" on them to break it up, right? Maybe my far-to-friendly exterior is finally getting tough enough to match my no-nonsense attitude!
After the next class, I remembered where I had been going when I stopped to play peace maker. Headed out again, I walked past the same area where a few of the kids had gathered again.
I overheard one boy say to another, "Yeah, and So-n-So wasn't even trying! I mean, MRS. RIEGER was holding him back."
Ok, I have GOT to start working out.
Right after I reward myself with a chocolate ice cream cone and a stack of cookies at lunch.
